Mirabell Gardens highlights
Family Activities in Mirabell Gardens
Mirabell Gardens is an historical preservation site and so does not have a children’s playground or recreation areas. However, the dwarf garden is a good place to start with the kids. They’ll also love the hedge maze, and if you want to lose them for a while, this could be a good place (just kidding … maybe).
Summer concerts take place inside the gardens. Check dates and times with the Salzburg Tourist Bureau website before you arrive: www2.salzburg.info.
Food and Drinks in Mirabell Gardens
You will find restaurants and cafés outside the gardens in either Makartplatz or Mirabellplatz.
Toilet facilities are inside the gardens, north of the Pegasus fountain; there are also facilities on Mirabellplatz, outside the east gates.
Outside Mirabell Gardens
Salzburg is a walkable city, where most of its history is within a couple square kilometers of the Staatsbrucke Bridge. Sites close to Mirabell Gardens include things the entire family will enjoy.
The kids will love to tour the Marionette Theater and see a performance. The theater is on Schwarzstrasse, just outside the Makartplatz gates. Next door to the theater is the Mozarteum, a grand performance theater.
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart grew up in Salzburg and wrote music for the Austrian Empire before he moved on to Vienna. The Mozarts lived in 9 Getreidegasse from 1747 to 1773. Wolfgang was born there in 1756. Today, the Mozart home is a museum. Among other attractions, you can see the violin played by the musical genius as a child, his concert violin, his clavichord, a pianoforte, portraits, and letters of the Mozart family. Directions to Mirabell Gardens
Mirabell Gardens is on the north side of Salzburg’s old town center, across the Salzach River. The gardens main entrances are on Mirabellplatz and Makartplatz, between Schwarzstrasse on the west and Rainerstrasse on the east. Both sides of the Salzach River have a promenade, and crossing any of its central bridges puts you on the path toward Mirabell (as long as you walk north, that is). If you are coming by car, three parking lots surround the gardens: Auersperg-Garage, Mirabell-Garage, and Raiffeisen-Garage.
