Karlovy Vary’s picturesque park is dedicated to late-Romanticism’s most traditional composers, Antonin Dvorak. This devotion is fitting for a park that retains a 19th-century ambience amid 21st-century spa tourism. Dvorak Park sits in a bowl formed by the surrounding Bohemian valley. In a town where baroque and rococo architecture looms from the steep hills, the park’s open grounds give your eyes a renewed sense of space.

dvorak park_6Spa towns seek to create that “youth springs eternal” ambience. There’s no better place to find that than in a park. And Dvorak’s unique element is a public mineral spring. This is one of Karlovy Vary’s 13 springs you’ll find people gathered around in town. Hot, salty, mineral-rich water flows from a neo-classical designed fountain beneath an arcade. Visitors stop through to fill specially designed ceramic cups. They look like miniature flower sprinkler buckets, and perhaps that’s appropriate for the park setting. In fact, the metaphor of watering your body with a life-enriching mineral elixir works just fine for me. It makes for better tea water than drunken right from the spigot, in my opinion, but then, each spring has its own flavor qualities.

As you sip the hot water through the cup’s spout, walk along Dvorak’s paths and commune with nature. Hey, you can just as well step into the casino after your spa treatments, but why not create that whole life-force experience? You might just achieve the nexus-of-the-universe moment, and who could blame you for at least trying? The Sadova Colonada hosts summertime concerts you can hear at the far edges of the park. A Viennese architect constructed the arcade in 1882.

dvorak park_4Staying in a spa town for a few days, and walking through a restful park, gives one an idyllic view of life: warm sunshine, a valley breeze, birdsong aloft, thoughtful sculptures, benches overlooking flowerbeds, and soft lawns. It’s a spoiling environment, and we all deserve this on long-awaited holidays. Or perhaps this is how life should be lived in contrast to how most actually live theirs.

Family Activities in Dvorak Park
While the park has no children’s playground, the wide lawns are perfect for the kids to have the chance to run around, play ball, or generally act like kids. They also might be well interested in the flowers that grow along the paths. Two interesting sculptures draw kids to the wonders of art they may not otherwise feel up to while walking through the solemn rooms of a museum.
