Food and Drinks in Orsteds Park
A casual café sits in the northwest corner, with outside tables that overlook the length of the pond. The menu offers light snacks and sandwiches, with tea, coffee, sodas, beer and wine. To have a picnic, you can stop in a grocery along one of the side streets opposite the Norre Voldgade entrances.
Outside Orsteds Park
Orsteds Park is one block south from Copenhagen’s shopping district beginning at Fiolstraade. This street and Kobmagergade run parallel (in a rude snake-like path) all the way to the canal that surrounds Christiansborg royal palace and the historic government buildings. Within this nearly two-square kilometer area is the heart of Copenhagen’s tourist district, and along with the shopping you’ll find hotels, hostels, bars, and restaurants that are off the major streets (and thus touristy, overpriced restaurants). I found a cellar bar on my first night in Copenhagen that sold beer “flights” from a menu of more than 20 microbrew varieties. I don’t recall the bar’s name, and could not find it again, but there are many just like it in Copenhagen—all within stumbling range back to your hotel.
Bicycles are the preferred transportation among Danes, and you’ll dodge more bicyclists than cars or buses. You’d think a race was on there are so many people buzzing along the streets. You can be part of the crowd and less the target if you rent a bike. It’s a good way to see all of Copenhagen if you have only a couple of days, because there is so much to see that’s spread throughout the city. Directions to Orsteds Park
Orsteds Park is between the parallel streets Norre Farimagsgade and Norre Voldgade, just west (across the street, actually) of Copenhagen’s tourist district. From the train station (Tivoli is across the street), walk north one-half kilometer on Bernstorffsgade and follow the curve as the street turns into Hammerichsgade, then Norre Voldgade. You can also take the S-train (metro) from the train station to the Norreport stop. The park is 100 meters south.
